I went down to Zion National Park with my brothers for a few days to do some canyoneering. Canyoneering is going through slot canyons that require rappelling, swimming through pools of water, hiking, and climbing down stuff. For me and my brother Kelly (the other two brothers have no fear) it was all about conquering fears. The scariest parts are some of the rappels. Walking to the edge of a cliff and leaning back over the edge is not a natural thing to do. The worst two rappels are shown below.
After you walk out past this V in the rock, you drop 170 feet. This was the second worst rappel.

Our second hike (each hike took 10 hours, so we did one a day) was through Mystery Canyon. This was the first rappel, about 70 feet down.
Looking up the first rappel.
This was the scariest rappel. My brother Alex is setting up the rope. To get to the rope, you have to walk out on the ledge that he's sitting on, and it's 120 feet down into a cold pool at the bottom.

The last rappel was in the dark (we had head lamps on), and was down a waterfall into the Narrows.
On Thursday, Mollie and I went with my friend Mitch and his sister to a concert by She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M.Ward). We both like their music a lot. It was really fun, and a great way to end the summer.

We recently watched a show called I Shouldn't Be Alive with 2 guys who did this exact thing, in Utah. I think they did it more in the winter. So, congratulations for being successful.
ReplyDeleteShe & him must love slc, I heard the show there was free. We had to pay to see them here in Omaha, totally worth it though!
ReplyDeleteThose canyoneering pictures are beautiful! And I've never heard of She & Him. I'll have to look it up.
